Computing (Year 6) - Cornerstones Education

At Tylers Green First School, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils will be using Barefoot Computing to support their learning in Computing. Barefoot Computing has been carefully chosen to work alongside our Cornerstones Curriculum, helping to bring learning to life through practical, engaging and creative activities.

Through a mixture of unplugged activities, programming, digital content creation and online safety lessons, children develop the skills and knowledge needed to become confident, responsible and creative users of technology.

    What is Barefoot Computing?

Barefoot Computing is a primary computing programme that helps children develop computational thinking and digital skills through engaging, hands-on activities. Many lessons can be taught with or without technology and are designed to fit naturally within wider curriculum topics.

By combining Barefoot Computing with our Cornerstones projects, pupils can apply computing knowledge in meaningful contexts while developing problem-solving, logical reasoning and creativity.

National Curriculum Objectives for Key Stage 1

    Pupils are taught to:

    • Understand what algorithms are and how they are implemented as programs on digital devices.
    • Understand that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions.
    • Create and debug simple programs.
    • Use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs.
    • Use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content.
    • Recognise common uses of information technology beyond school.
    • Use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private.
    • Know where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact online.

    How Barefoot Computing Supports Cornerstones

The Barefoot Computing curriculum complements our Cornerstones projects by:

    • Encouraging enquiry and exploration.
    • Developing problem-solving and computational thinking skills.
    • Supporting cross-curricular learning.
    • Providing meaningful real-world contexts for computing.
    • Building children's confidence with technology through practical experiences.

This approach ensures that computing is not taught in isolation but becomes an exciting and relevant part of children's broader learning.

    Online Safety

Online safety is embedded throughout our curriculum. Children learn how to:

    • Stay safe online.
    • Protect personal information.
    • Communicate respectfully.
    • Recognise when something makes them uncomfortable.
    • Seek help from trusted adults.

We believe that developing safe and responsible digital citizens is an essential part of every child's education.

    Our Vision

We want all children at Tylers Green First School to develop the confidence to explore technology, think logically, solve problems creatively and use digital tools safely. Through Barefoot Computing and Cornerstones, pupils build strong foundations for future learning and life in an increasingly digital world.
